Ayuba Suleiman Jallo-Black History Is Everyone’s History

Where We All Come From

Ayuba Suleiman Jallo

Did you know that Ayuba Suleiman Jallo (1701-1773) wrote his way out of slavery? According to Uncle Skip (Henry Louis Gates Jr.), Jallo was a free, royal, educated, man who was captured by enraged white men and sold into slavery in the United States.

After several failed attempts of fleeing from slavery, Jallo wrote a letter in one of the ancient languages that he had mastered and asked his owner to mail it for him which he did. Once the letter was translated, scholars in Oxford purchased Jallo and had him sent to London where he lived and worked for a while before being sent back to Africa.
