Did you know that Gwendolyn Brooks spoke at the Hillcrest Highschool (Illinois) graduation in 1988?

Brooks was the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize for Anne Allen. Brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas, but moved to Chicago in her youth. Brooks published several poems in the National Defender which helped her to gain national notoriety.  In 1968 Brooks became the Poet Laureate of Illinois and in 1976 the first Black woman inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
