Why Shonda Rhimes Is Amazing
I love Shonda Rhimes. I really do. I read her book back in November and I have to tell you that I thought that it was amazing. To be honest, I read it twice back to back. I literally finished the book and then turned back to page number one and started over again. Why? I don’t know. I felt like Shonda Rhimes had invited me into her home and I was not ready to leave. It was not a fairytale, but for me it was like one. I was getting to know a woman whom I admire.
Could it be that I admire her because she is from Chicago? It could be.
Could it be that I admire her because we are the exact same age, but she has done the things that I have dreamt of doing? It could be.
Could it be that in so many ways I identify with her? It could be.
I didn’t know most of this stuff about her until I read her book, but every time I heard her name I listened diligently. Every time I knew she was going to be on television I leaned in a little closer. Every time she started a new show I tuned in faithfully. Every time there was an article in a magazine I made sure to get the issue even if it was only a column long. I am serious about Shonda Rhimes. There was a meme asking if you could sit on a bench for an hour and talk to anyone who would it be. Well… Shonda Rhimes. I talk to Jesus everyday and I have never talked to Shonda Rhimes, so how is this a hard decision?
Honestly, I didn’t know that Shonda Rhimes was African-American until the whole thing with Isiah Washington went down on Grey’s Anatomy. I didn’t care. This woman was doing great things on television. It ended up that her being black was an added bonus.
I am a feminist. I can’t help it. I am an African-American feminist. I can’t help that either. Shonda Rhimes, to me epitomizes what being a woman really means. I am not going to tell you about her life and why I feel this way. Read the book, “The Year Of Yes” on sale at amazon.com.
I will post a review of the book in the coming weeks. The review has been written for some time. I want to be confident that I am doing her justice.
Keep on writing Shonda Rhimes!
