Vincente Guerrero-Black History Is Everyone’s History
Where We All Come From
Vincente Guerrero
Did you know that Vincente Guerrero was the first Black President in North America? Born August 9, 1783, to a mixed-race father, a mule driver father, according to his biography, Guerrero fought to help Mexico earn her freedom. Guerrero was a true patriot of Mexico and believed in what the country could become. He ran for president twice and felt as though he was cheated out of his victory, so he overthrew the government and, in 1829, became the first Black president in North America.
Guerrero’s victory would not last long. In 1831 after abolishing slavery, he was executed. Guerrero’s story lives on as he is the face on the fifty-peso bill.
