Celebrating Black History Month
Did you know that some Black people did own slaves? Many times, free slaves would save and purchase their relatives or their spouses. If a man purchased his wife but never freed her and they had children, his children were then born slaves and belonged to him as property.
The outside world told black kids when I was growing up that we weren’t worth anything. But our parents said it wasn’t so, and our churches and our schoolteachers said it wasn’t so. They believed in us, and we, therefore, believed in ourselves.
