Edward Kennedy Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974)
You probably know him as Duke Ellington the King of Jazz and Father of the Harlem Music Renaissance. Born in Washington, DC to parents who both loved and played the piano, Ellington had it in his blood from birth to become a great artist. Ellington is important to Black history because of the music that he created. Without it, where would we be? The next time the ivory is being tickled on your favorite song, nod your head and throw up a quick thanks to Mr. Duke Ellington.
